H. Carson Rhyne is General Presbyter of Presbytery of the James. In this post he introduces the UPSem-POJ evangelism initiative from the perspective of the presbytery.
Part of our call as disciples of Christ is to share the Good News that Jesus is Lord of our lives and our world. Part of the responsibility of the Presbytery is to assist congregations in sharing that Good News in a rapidly changing world. It is not easy…it is a challenge…it is our calling.
Presbytery of the James, in partnership with Union Presbyterian Seminary, is attempting to fulfill our calling to “GO FORTH” and make disciples! Through the blessings of the sale of the old presbytery office building, the POJ worked with the seminary to create this new initiative and ministry. Its purpose is to train seminary students as well as to assist congregations in this calling.
Rev. John Vest has been called as Visiting Assistant Professor of Evangelism at the seminary for a four year term. John will teach two courses each year, work to mentor seminary students in the area of evangelism, and work with individual congregations in our Presbytery in their outreach to their community. It is an exciting time to be in partnership with the seminary, congregations, and the Presbytery.
As Presbyterians, we always do best connected to one another in our ministries. We ask you to be in prayer for this new initiative…it is one of a kind in seminary education in our denomination and in this country. We are charting a new course to fulfill our calling to GO FORTH! Join with us in the work which we will do with God and through God’s Spirit. Indeed God is doing a new thing!
